A continuation from the previous post.

I got to experience a different Malay wedding culture while covering Yasir & Izzah’s Bruneian wedding which challenged me even further as a Wedding Photographer.

Berbedak Ceremony.

2 days after the solemnization, they had their reception at The Rizqun International Hotel. The celebration started early in the morning with a “Berbedak” or a Blessing Ceremony by the family. The newlyweds dressed up in a bright red “songket” dress with the bride wearing a gold head gear while the groom wore a “songkok” (Muslim hat).

The blessing was done by family members by anointing the Bride/Groom with an ointment made from colored rice flour and scented oils.

The Wedding Reception & The Basuh Kaki Ceremony

After the Berbedak Ceremony, Yasir & Izzah had another change of dress. The final dress change was done for their actual reception and the “basuh kaki” ceremony. The “basuh kaki” or a literal translation – the washing feet – ceremony where the couples feet is placed on top of each other and family and friends would pour water over their feet symbolizing nothing less than just pouring water over the newlyweds feet. And, of course the well-wishers will give monetary gifts to the newlyweds.

Since Yasir has Chinese heritage in him, they had a simple tea ceremony after that.

After the wedding ceremony, we had couple of minutes to get the portraiture done.

I used the surrounding as the background and props for the portraiture. I knew that both Yasir & Izzah was already tired from 1 whole day of events so I had to be quick. Surprisingly, it was a great session.

I had tremendous fun during this assignment. This was a first for myself and my assistant, Majid (www.nikmajid.com). But we are looking forward to more in the future.

Without the generous and kind hospitality from both Yasir & Izzah’s family, I couldn’t have done my job as their memory maker. They treated me as part of the family and was eager to introduce me to the wedding culture of the Bruneian people.

And they have succeeded an that.

According to the original plan, I was supposed to have 30 minutes but due to the delayed start to the Anand Kharaj, I had only 5 minutes with Nimrit & Gurmit to make beautiful outdoor portrait of them before they headed out to their lunch reception.

It was quick and fun session. 5 minutes was all I need to capture a simple yet beautiful moments for these two newlyweds.

I had the opportunity capturing beautiful moments from Yasir & Izzah’s wedding in Brunei last weekend that was held at The Rizqun International Hotel.

You might remember them from the Addicted to Love session they had with me when they were in Kuala Lumpur few months ago.

Beautiful couple and a wonderful country.

Amir & Ruzanna had their wedding ceremony back in December 2010 (and I was there as the official photographer). We’d managed to squeeze in a day after session before I left for USA in January.

They are in love, there was no denying that.

We had a quick yet intimate 30 minutes session before the rain stopped us. Enjoy the images.

After the first Outdoor Portraiture session with the gown and the tux, I had a casual session with Beth & Amir at Marquette Park, Gary, IN.

I had couple of shots with them in the traditional “baju melayu” and “baju kurung” for Amir’s wedding reception back in Malaysia. They simply looked gorgeous!

Then, we had the casual shots done.

The weather was freezing but I had a great time making these images.

After their wedding reception in Crown Point, IN the day before, we had an outdoor session (in the snow) at Miller Beach, near Gary, IN.

We had a 30 minutes fun outdoor session since the weather was so freezing. This is the first part of the session – with the wedding gown and tux. We had a casual second session the very next day.

I’d scouted the place a day before and found this big tree that I like so much.

It was fun creating images in the freezing weather. It was quite a challenge. We continued the outdoor session with a casual session the very next day. Stay tuned for that!

I created these images at a location that I guess nobody would ever thought about having a session here – next to a cement factory. I just love the empty barren sandy space.

K + TJ had gotten married in the late 2010 and although I didn’t get the chance to photograph their wedding, they engaged me to create their the day after images.

We had fun. And most importantly, this was done in 30 minutes!

I had a Day After portraiture session with Khalid & Mahani right after their reception two days before. I’ve always love Day After session simply because the couple will be fresh and not tired; and same goes to the photographer.

We hade the session at Mahani’s parents’ getaway in Kuang. It is a great place to create images!
